Vibrational Stress Relief

On-Site Vibrational Stress Relief Services

Vibrational stress relief is an innovative method for accelerated seasoning of machine components and structures. The process involves subjecting these elements to resonant vibrations, effectively reducing peak residual stresses caused by welding, casting, or heat treatment. By inducing various forms of vibration throughout the entire volume of the element, unfavorable stresses that lead to deformation, dimensional loss, or cracking are eliminated.

Metals Suitable for VSR Treatment

Vibrational stress relief can be applied to almost all structural metals, including:

  • Steels: carbon, tool, stainless, and cast steel.
  • Non-ferrous metals: aluminum, brass, copper.
  • Exotic metals: magnesium, stellites, molybdenum, tungsten.
  • Cast iron: ductile iron, malleable iron.

Advantages of VSR Treatment

  • Versatility: Vibrational stress relief can be applied at any stage of the production process, including before finishing operations. It removes both welding and machining-induced stresses.
  • Time efficiency: The process takes only a few tens of minutes compared to hours required for annealing.
  • Economy: The cost is 30-50% of traditional annealing.
  • Precision: Allows for reduced machining allowances and combines rough and semi-finish machining processes.
  • Wide range of applications: Suitable for components ranging from a few kilograms to several dozen tons, including extensive structures.
  • Safety: Does not alter the structure or mechanical properties of the material.
  • Quality control: Process registration and resonance characteristics can serve as part of the quality assurance system.
  • Ecology: The process has no negative environmental impact.

Limitations of Vibrational Stress Relief

Vibrational stress relief is not effective for removing stresses caused by cold deformation. Its application is also limited for pressure vessels, especially in cases where annealing is required for constructions operating in corrosive environments.
